چکیده

The effect of small urban areas on cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning activity is analysed for Spain. The results shown that the CG-flash number is enhanced within and downwind the most of towns considered and that large population and higher SO2 concentration contribute to the increase of the number of CG-flashes. INTRODUCTION AND DATA Several studies have reported that large cities of the USA are associated to an enhancement of the storm activity (Changnon, 2001). This effect occurred in the urban area and/or downwind of the city (Wescott, 1995; Orville et al., 2001). Here it is analysed the urban effect on cloud-to ground (CG) lightning associated to small towns of Spain. Lightning data were obtained from the lightning detection network belonging to the Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia. We considered nine towns of the Regional Community of Castilla y Leon (Central Spain) (Table 1). The total number of CGlightning flashes were counted within blocks of 0.1o longitude x 0.1o latitude (~ 10 km) surrounding each town. Since the prevailing storm motion in the analysed zone has a westerly component, the upwind area is located to the west and the downwind area to the east. The upwind and downwind number of CG-flashes are the mean of the flash number counted within blocks of 0.1o longitude x 0.1o latitude located to the (NW, W, SW) and (NE, E, SE) of the town, respectively. Only CG-lightning data of three years (1992-1994) are considered. Table 1. Characteristics of Urban Lightning Hazards for Atlanta, Georgia

Weather-related hazards are the result of interactions between the physical environment and the demographics of the community that experience them. Numerous studies have documented urban heat island (UHI) modification of cloud-to-ground lightning flash densities, but none have linked flashes to the underlying demographics. In this study, I compared flash and housing densities for 25 counties en...

Comprehensive Analysis of Dense Point Cloud Filtering Algorithm for Eliminating Non-Ground Features

Point cloud and LiDAR Filtering is removing non-ground features from digital surface model (DSM) and reaching the bare earth and DTM extraction. Various methods have been proposed by different researchers to distinguish between ground and non- ground in points cloud and LiDAR data. Most fully automated methods have a common disadvantage, and they are only effective for a particular type of surf...

Characteristics of cloud-to-ground lightning activity over Seoul, South Korea in relation to an urban effect

Cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning flash data collected by the lightning detection network installed at the Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA) have been used to study the urban effect on lightning activity over and around Seoul, the largest metropolitan city of South Korea, for the period of 1989–1999. Negative and positive flash density and the percentage of positive flashes have been calc...

Urban lightning climatology and GIS : An analytical framework from the case study of Atlanta , Georgia

There are three underdeveloped components of urban cloud-to-ground lightning studies: (1) the integration of multiple flash descriptors into more informative summary metrics of flash production, (2) the comparison of flash patterns by thunderstorm type, and (3) the correspondence of urban flashes with underlying land use. We used a GIS to integrate these components as part of an analysis of war...

Lightning Activity over Large Urban Areas of the Southeastern Brazil

This paper presents the preliminary results from CG lightning characteristics analysis over three large urban areas in southeastern Brazil: the São Paulo metropolitan area, Vale do Paraíba Paulista and the Campinas metropolitan area. A lightning dataset of about 310,000 flashes was obtained by the Brazilian lightning detection network during the months of December, January and February from 199...
